with Christopher Williams piano   Catherine Tanner Williams oboe

A return visit to an ancient castle in a Christmas programme featuring a fascinating mix of the familiar and the new, some to be heard again on the  CD made in the Castle Christmas Music at the Castle.

Threatening wintry weather eased and warmed on arrival by wine and mincepies, the audience at the close, appeared to suggest by its vociferous reaction, it was worthwhile missing  rival attractions on TV.

The music presented by the Singers’ Director, well known in countless performances, did not disappoint.  The Singers’ accomplished accompanist, Christopher Williams, with  oboist Catherine Tanner-Williams played the haunting Gabriel’s Oboe by Morricone from the film The Mission.  They joined with a trio of superb female choristers in Burgon’s Ave Verum Corpus, another haunting background piece from BBCTV in Brideshead Revisited.

The latter performed in the Castle Hall’s gallery lent extra atmosphere to this event, as did the bass soloist, Tom Hunt, in the same place, in an excerpt from Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on Christmas Carols.  This was preceded by a snatch of Bach to launch this outstanding pre-Christmas programme.

The Singers next appearanxe is on Monday January 2 in their 21st annual afternoon New Year Concert, in St.Davids Cathedral at 2.15 p.m.   See Forthcoming events.
